Jonathan and Meri's March Newsletter
Saturday, 21 March 2009 21:57
Hey Everybody

Well it is time for another newsletter. Meri and I have been very busy
these past two months. Most of our time has been spent looking at land
and figuring out what visa we should be applying for. As well we have
been able to enjoy some family time and take a much needed trip to
Makassar.

As a family we have spent a lot of time travelling around looking at
land and asking God for his guidance. We have been able to find a few
parcels of land but the prices have been a little high. The problem
with finding land for sale in Toraja is that there is no newspaper or
bulletin board to post sales ads. Most of our time is spent visiting
different areas and asking people if they know of land for sale. This
can be very time consuming and frustrating. The nice part about all
this travel is we are getting to learn the area much better and we are
getting a feel for where we would like to be situated.

Currently the district we are living in is being split in two what was
once Toraja will now be North and South Toraja respectively. The
reason for this split is due to animosity between the people of the
two areas. The people of the north feel that they have been deprived
of development and that most of the money sent to the district has
been used in the south. This seems to ring fairly true as most
villages in the south have had paved roads, power and city water for
well over 10 years. Whereas most areas in the north are just starting
to receive power and most do not have safe dirt roads let alone paved
roads. Most of the infrastructure currently in the north has been
owner built or provided by Non Government Organizations (NGO's) as
district money was rarely spent in the area.

With the current split going on there are a lot of changes in the
area. One of these is a refocusing of the economy. North Toraja has
put forward and proposal to focus on Tourism, encouraging Organic
agriculture and developing infrastructure. This fits very well into
what we feel we can assist with as Meri has her Bachelors in Tourism
and I have been focusing on Community development including
infrastructure and agriculture.

We are proposing to set up a Small Farm Research Center that will be
used as a test plot for new agriculture and livestock techniques; as
well as a demonstration area for appropriate technologies and Eco
tourism. The SFRC will be able to assist farmers in choosing
appropriate crops to grow along with training on organic growing
techniques. As well we hope to be able to raise awareness of eco
tourism and train locals in areas like bean to cup coffee tours, rice
cultivation tours, preservation of the environment, etc.

Now on to one of my least favourite subject Visas. After many days of
research and finding a friend who knows almost everything about Visas
in Indonesia we have been able to get our hands on the new (2006)
Immigration law. This law provides many provisions for Visas among
them the most important an Indonesian wife can sponsor her husband for
a permanent stay Visa. This is an answer to our prayers. What this
means is that Meri will now be able to sponsor me for a 1 year
extendable visa. This will save us many long drives for extensions
which we have been doing these last 3 months. As well it will save us
money on fees, taxes, and travel. The only hitch is that because this
law is “new” (in the Indonesian sense) officials don’t know how to
process it all the time. Welcome to our world we have a law that is in
the books but no one knows how to do anything. Some days this can be
very frustrating.

Once we get the visa approved I will need to leave the country and
pick it up, most likely in Singapore as we have family living there
and the flights are under $100 round trip.

As I mentioned above we as a family were able to get a way for a week
to Makassar. We had been asked to come down to visit family that was
over for a wedding. We had a great time taking our family around. We
were even able to visit Bantimurung the butterfly reserve. There was
an amazing waterfall there that acted as a river ride with inner
tubes. Kezia really loved this and had a great time playing in the
water. We also had some time to restock on some of the needed items in
our house that are hard to find in Toraja.

Prayer Requests:

1. Please pray that we will find favour with the new Government in
North Toraja and will be able to assist them in their proposal.

2. Please pray for our visa situation. Pray that God will open the
doors needed to get the visa and that we will have safety as we travel
to Jakarta to apply for it and then to Singapore to pick it up.

Meri and Jonathan's January Newsletter
Friday, 23 January 2009 00:00
Hey Everybody

Meri and I are very happy to be starting another year here in
Indonesia. We have seen God move in our lives and mission amazingly
over the last year and look forward to seeing what God has in mind
this year.

As is traditional for a New Years letter I would like to give a short
recap. Last year was a very big year for us Meri finished her degree
in economics majoring in tourism management. Meri is very happy to be
done school and to now be able to help revive tourism in Toraja.

Just as Meri was finishing her final exams a very sad event happened.
Meri's very close uncle fell from the roof of his church and passed
away. This sudden tragic event caused a large stir in our lives as
Maria and Kezia headed home to Papua to attend the funeral and comfort
their family members.

In late September Meri and I packed up all our belongings and moved to
Toraja. We had been looking forward to this move for a long time.
Though living in Toraja is a lot harder than living in Bali both Meri
and I know God's plan is for us to be here and we both trust God to
watch over us and guide us.

In late October Meri and I had the great blessing to join an outreach
team from our home church in Canada (Willow Park Church). We spent two
and a half weeks in India helping out at a children's home with
construction projects. As well we were able to see a small part of
India as tourists. Meri and I had a great time with the team and made
some lasting friendships.

After returning from India Meri and I rushed off to Papua. Well we
ended up taking the boat so it was not quite the rush but still very
exciting. After 4 days on an overloaded boat filled with cockroaches
we arrived in Biak. Needless to say I had Meri book air tickets for
the return trip. We were just in time to help with the planning of
Maria and James' wedding. It's quite an experience as it involves all
the family even the 3rd cousin you have only met once. After the long
days of planning all was ready and Maria and James got married on the
18th of December. It was a great wedding and everything went according
to plan.

After the wedding Meri and I were able to enjoy a little bit of rest
before the Christmas rush. Meri caught up with her siblings and
cousins and I did some fishing with Meri's brothers. Before we knew it
Christmas had arrived and we were running from house to house to greet
everybody. They have a great tradition in Biak for Christmas; everyone
goes around to each other's house sharing food and stories. The only
problem is by the end of the day you are so full you can barely walk
home.

On the 2nd of January Meri and I plus Kezia headed back to Makassar
and then on to Toraja. Maria and James followed afterwards and arrived
on the 20th. Now we are all one large family living together here in
Toraja.

As for the coming year Meri and I are looking forward to starting up
our training institute here in Toraja. Currently we are looking for a
plot of land that will allow us to present a large range of technical
and agricultural examples along with a classroom and a place for our
family and helpers to live. For now while we are looking for land and
raising funds we are renting a house in Makale. We have also started
some small projects on the land we are renting these projects include,
village chicken upgrading, soil rehabilitation, and duck meat
production. We are also hoping to start up a rabbit project and a
brick stove project. We have started each of these projects with the
goal of helping villagers learn new skills that will assist them in
being more independent.

If you would like more information on any of our projects or have any
ideas for future projects please email us at
This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Prayer Request:

1.    Pray that God will show us the land that we are to purchase and
provide all the money needed to purchase and develop the land.

2.    Pray for Jonathan's Visa situation as we look into applying for a
temporary resident permit. This is a new visa option that has just
opened and will allow Jonathan to stay in Indonesia for 1 year periods
or longer without need of leaving for extensions.

3.    Pray for Maria, James and Kezia as they start to live their new
life together as a family and as well with us.

Jonathan and Meri's November Newsletter Full Update
Saturday, 29 November 2008 00:00

Hey Everyone,

Now that we have had time to sit down relax and go over the last month
we wanted to send out a full update about our trip to India.
Meri and I had an amazing time over the past month. God has used many
experiences to speak to us and through us. We have been blessed more
than we ever thought possible and have seen God do amazing things.
In order for Meri and I to go to India we had to obtain visas. In
Canada or for that matter almost any other country this would be a
very simple matter of mailing off your passports and waiting for it to
return. In our case it involved a week and a half in Jakarta to make
our visas. Meri and I were blessed to be able to stay with friends
from the King's Kids team that had just visited us in Toraja. Our
friends Uncle Hardie and Auntie Lina were an amazing blessing to us.
Uncle Hardie runs a Christian Taxi ministry in Jakarta and he is the
most amazing man of God I have ever met. Uncle Hardie spends his days
ministering to people he picks up with his taxi and blessing the less
fortunate with whatever he can spare. Staying with Uncle Hardie and
Auntie Lina now looking back was God's first step in his plan for our
trip to India. Through staying with this amazing couple of God Meri
and I were challenged to love more unconditionally and to always
portray the heart of Jesus to those around us.

After our time in Jakarta we headed off to India. God enabled us to
receive our Visas just in time and now was allowing our flight to land
right after the team from WPC landed. That night a tired Meri and I
met a very tired team that had just travelled almost halfway around
the world. It was great to meet up with Canadian's after almost a year
of being away. Thankfully along with the very tired team was one very
awake individual Paul East. Paul quickly had us all rounded up and
into our bus and we were off to our hotel for an early mornings sleep.
That afternoon Sue East, Paul's wife met us at the hotel to show us
around New Delhi for the day. Sue took us all over the place from
India gate to the president's palace and to FabIndia (to get some
traditional clothes). Once we were all decked out and seen as much as
we could take Sue took us out for dinner. We had Masala Dosa's which
made Meri and I laugh because Masala Dosa in Indonesian literally
translates to "sin problem". After dinner we all headed back to the
hotel to crash and get ready for our early morning train ride to
Kalka.

The next morning we were all up and on the train and ready for the
beginning of our first train ride in India. For that matter it was my
very first train ride which was a fun experience for me. Six hours
later we arrived in Kalka and got into our cars to head to Sabathu.
After another 1 hour drive we arrived at the hotel the team would be
staying at and got settled a bit before heading off to Shanti Niketan
to meet everyone for the first time. As it worked out the WPC team
arrived on the same day as the Westside Church team was leaving. This
made for mixed emotions for the children as they were saying goodbye
to close friends and saying hello to new ones. That night we had an
amazing time. The kids put on some performances and sang some songs
and then we danced and danced and danced. I wish Indonesian men (and
for that matter Canadian men) would dance like the Indian men so free
and wild. It was such a great time and a great way to meet the
children. We got home very late that evening to find dinner awaiting
us. Dawa the hotel manager took it as his job to make sure we were
well fed and healthy. As we soon found out there was never a lack of
food and if anything we had to plead for it to stop because we could
eat no more.

The next day bright and early we were on our way to the home so as to
not meet the bus on the one lane road. James our fearless leader along
with Stan the man showed us what had already been accomplished by the
Westside team and what was left for us to do. The Westside team had
certainly accomplished a lot but there was still a lot to go. We had
to pour about 12 more 10 ft2 concrete pads, lay out 400 feet of water
pipe, tap into the existing water system, add two 5000L tanks to the
new system, and put a roof on the boys new bathroom. On top of all
that there were gates to be made, a lot of painting to be done and
kids to play with. All these jobs kept us very busy over our one and a
half weeks on site. As well since it was a holiday all the kids were
home and so we had to learn a whole lot of names. We were all
introduced to the kids and immediately all the kids wanted to talk to
Meri the problem was she could not understand as they were speaking
Hindi. The kids all thought Meri was Indian and had just got back from
Canada. It seems that the tribe that most of the staff come from
Mizoram which has very similar bloodlines to the tribe Meri comes from
in Indonesia (mainly Mongolian blood). So the Staff had to explain to
the kids that Meri was actually Indonesian and not Indian. After this
little mix up we started to notice that many people treated Meri as
and India (hawkers would leave her alone etc.)

We were blessed to have two Sundays in the village where we were able
to attend Sunday school at the home and then church in the town. The
church was a magnificent building built by the British around 1917. A
lot of history was there from the honouring of fallen soldiers to the
old bell tower. Every Sunday after church we were able to walk through
the small town and enjoy the sights and smells. It was very
interesting to see a town which had streets so narrow no cars we able
to get through them. Many items we being sold up and down the streets
and cows walked along minding their own business as if the humans we
not there. All in all it was a pleasant experience that was able to
open Meri and my eyes to a new culture.

After our first Sunday off we were right back to work pouring cement.
We did not know how we would get it all done as we were not what you
would call a physically fit construction team. But low and behold God
sent us a group of angles ok so maybe not angles but they might just
as well have been for us. About ten young men that had graduated from
the home and we now working or in school took their holidays to come
back to the home and lend a hand. I feel our team would agree in
saying that without these young men we would not have been able to
accomplish half of what we finished. The young men really put their
backs into it carrying pails of sand, gravel, and concrete, and
digging ditches for the pipes. Our team was so happy to have the extra
help and because of these boy's we were able to finish everything we
had planned to get done.

After a long but fruitful time at the home it came time to say our
goodbyes. The children threw us a big send off party and we had even
more dancing that Meri and I enjoyed very much. Meri and I felt very
sad to leave and have felt God calling us back. Next time we head back
we would like to bring a team from Indonesia with us.

After our return to New Delhi we were able to spend a day in Agra the
city of Love. We were amazed by the Taj Mahal and the Red Fort such
large buildings with such glorious backgrounds. They reminded me of
Salomon's palace though I am sure they would not match a tenth of the
splendour. After returning from Agra we had a day of down time and
then the team headed back to Canada. This was a sad time for Meri and
I but we hope to keep the great friendships we have made and maybe
even have some of the team visit us here in Indonesia.

As for Meri and I we spent another couple of days in New Delhi and
were able to meet up with some of the young men who helped us with the
construction at the home. We had a wonderful dinner at their house and
have become close friends. Meri and I can't wait to see them all
again.

After leaving India Meri and I headed to Singapore to make a new
Indonesian visa for me. We spent 4 days in the big city most of the
time was spent looking for cheap Christmas decorations to bring home
with us and enjoying the Christmas light displays. After Singapore it
was a short trip to Batam by ferry and then a wait for our two plane
rides and a bus ride to get us back home. After all our travel we have
been having some time to rest.

All in all this trip has been an amazing experience that has allowed
us to grow closer to God, build new amazing friendships, and grow
closer as a couple. We want to thank all our supporters and prayer
partners for being behind us. We could not have done this without your
dedication. May God bless you and your families.

Jonathan and Meri's October Update
Monday, 06 October 2008 00:00
Hey Everybody

Well Meri and I have made it safe and sound to Toraja and have found a
house to stay in. Right now we are in the middle of painting the house
with the help of a Kings Kid's YWAM team in Toraja. We are very happy
to be here and God has already been doing amazing things in the area.

Just last week Meri and I were asked to Join a YWAM team from Jakarta
on a trip to the village. We spent 3 days and 2 nights up in the
mountains helping out a local church. The team put on a couple of open
air meeting's filled with dance and song. And we all pitched in a hand
to clean up the church with some elbow grease and paint. Meri and I
were able to bless the church and team by purchasing a pig which we
roasted over the fire on a spit. The church members and the team from
Jakarta really loved it as they had never seen cooking this way or for
that matter a white person do the cooking. There were some of those
odd stares from the elders saying "What is this guy doing" but in the
end the food was so good the asked how they could do it again.

Now for an update on India. Meri and I have put our trust in God for
the remaining $1700 in funds to come in and we have got our plane
tickets ready. Both of us are getting ready to experience very
different culture than Indonesia or Canada. We can't wait to meet up
with the WPC (Willow Park Church) team and start helping out the kids
at the Children's Home.
